Columbus Clippers 6, Pawtucket Red Sox 1
Box Score · Clippers fall to 66-61
A four-run seventh inning helped the Columbus Clippers to their 66th win of the season yesterday, and it also helped Jarret Grube coming away from a solid start empty handed. The 35-year-old Grube pitched six innings with three strikeouts and three walks. His only run allowed was a solo shot in the fourth.
The Clippers offense came alive with a fifth-inning homer from Eric Stamets, his first home run since August 6. Stamets was one of three Clippers batters with multi-hit games. Designated hitter Michael Martinez and Yandy Diaz in left field had two hits as well. Yandy continues to be hot as h*ck. He has seven hits in his last three games and he’s batting .410 over his last 10.
Akron RubberDucks 2, Richmond Flying Squirrels 3
Box Score · RubberDucks fall to 62-63
Shane Bieber did the unthinkable. No, not striking out eight batters or allowing nine hits, which he also did. But he walked a batter. Please stop gasping, I know. It’s tragic. Bieber’s walk yesterday was just the 10th of his minor-league career, all 177.2 innings of it.
Bieber still had the Akron RubberDucks in a position to win when he left the game after 5.2 innings, but Jordan Milbrath ultimately gave it u pin the ninth with four walks and a game-ending single.
Offensively, the ‘Ducks finished with seven hits, but were 1-of-9 with runners in scoring position. Catcher Francisco Mejia looked like he was starting to turn it around over his last few games, but he was blanked against yesterday, going 0-for-4. He was, however, the only Akron batter to not strike out in the loss.
Lynchburg Hillcats 8, Salem Red Sox 7
Box Score · Hillcats improve to 77-49
Although Brock Hartson gave up four runs in an ugly second inning, he still recovered to turn in a solid six innings of work with four strikeouts, one walk, and only one hit allowed after the second inning.
Every Lynchburg Hillcats batter had a hit yesterday, with the exception of designated hitter Daniel Salters. Third baseman Sicnarf Loopstok’s three-run home run in the seventh inning ended up being the biggest swing of the game, and it prevented three runs from the Salem Red Sox in the eighth leading to a loss.
Lake County Captains 3, Dayton Dragons 8
Box Score · Captains fall to 50-75
Well. Brady Aiken being good was fun for two games. The Lake County Captains pitcher allowed six runs over 3.1 innings yesterday, striking out two and walking four.
The Captains offense had a lot to overcome, but they didn’t help themselves by striking out 13 times. Neither did lead-off batter Luke Wakamatsu by whiffing in three of his four at-bats.
Mahoning Valley Scrappers 0, West Virginia Black Bears 4
Box Score · Scrappers fall to 31-25
There is not much to talk about when a team can only muster three hits and three walks. But hey, Nolan Jones is still on fire; he was one of the few players to have a hit yesterday and he’s 15-for-40 in his last 10 games.
AZL Indians 2, AZL Reds 8
Box Score · Indians fall to 11-35
Quinten Holmes may have the potential to be Baseball’s Fastest Man, but he won’t get many chances to prove it going 0-for-5 like he did yesterday. To be fair, he wasn’t the only AZL Indians batter to have an off day. First baseman Mitch Reeves was hitless as well, with two strikeouts.
Starting pitcher Luis Valdez lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing five runs to score off seven hits.
The DSL Indians had a scheduled off-day.
