Pereza, 25, is a year removed from a 2.6 fWAR season with the Cincinnati Reds before his offense fell of a cliff and he slashed just .239/.285/.346 in 2019. It led to the Reds non-tendering him earlier in the offseason, leaving him as a free agent on the open market.
Danny Madden wrote a great FanPost shortly after the non-tender deadline, breaking down why exactly the should consider the versatile second baseman. Basically, it boils down to making decent contact, playing multiple positions well, not striking out, and hoping for the best.
At best, Peraza returns to his 2018 form and can be a serviceable starting baseman until Nolan Jones is ready and José Ramírez can shift to second base. At worst, he’s another utilityman that can easily be non-tendered in the offseason if Mike Freeman’s march to the Hall of Fame continues and makes him expendable.
