If you’re like me and rarely get to a baseball game in person, the food options at Progressive Field can be pretty overwhelming. Do you get nachos? Barbecue? Some weird hot dog covered in cereal?
I asked folks on Twitter and fellow staffers in Slack for recommendations when I took my family to a game on Memorial Day weekend and instantly forgot everything the moment I got there. Luckily a little place called Throwing Smoke BBQ was right behind our seats, so I grabbed a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and it was phenomenal.
Turns out, I accidentally picked one of the best places to eat the stadium, at least according to a recent fan survey.
Of the nearly 8,000 fans surveyed by SeatGeek, Throwing Smoke BBQ — along with local ice cream favorite Sweet Moses — were two places that stuck out the most. The full report on Progressive Field also praises the Hot Dog Derby that takes place at the end of the fifth inning.
Progressive Field was also ranked dead center (15th overall) in atmosphere and bathrooms. From my very limited experience of a handful of games, I’m shocked atmosphere isn’t higher. I can’t think of a single employee that wasn’t knowledgeable or ready to help with every little thing, and fans were engaged as ever. There was even a guy yelling “MARGARITAS” at the top of his lungs. How is that not top-10 worthy, at least?
Looking around the AL Central, nobody likes Comerica Park and Target Field has really nice bathrooms.
